I ran track in middle school many years ago. I remember hearing the roaring crowd screaming for me as I ran the 400m dash once around the track. I was pretty fast but I wish I was faster and definitely was far from the fastest runner on our track team.
I heard the word “fast” in an altogether different context as I studied the Holy Bible at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York. Jesus begins the scripture from Matthew 6:16 “Moreover, when you fast…” so I thought I should be fasting since Jesus thinks I should be fasting. I refrained from eating every Monday to show Jesus that I was serious about what He was saying in the Bible.
I delved deeper in the life of fasting and prayer when I met Joann Daughtry of Disciples on the Move ministry in Los Angeles, California. She is a prayer warrior and wrote a book called Fasting: The Spiritual Side, The Physical Side. I ate this book up with much hunger and after reading it, went on my first fast drinking nothing but water for 14 days. It was amazing the power my prayer gained while fasting.
Since my first extended fast, I have participated in many fasts for years and still continue to fast to keep my flesh under control and my spirit in charge, heralded by the Spirit of the Living God. I love fasting and prayer. I hope you give fasting a try in your life and read Joann Daughtry’s book on fasting to guide you on your journey.
Love healing hearts,
