When Jacob learned that Esau was coming to meet him with 400 men, his first response was not to panic, scheme, or run. Instead, he turned inward and prayed. But this was no generic plea; it was a raw, vulnerable admission of his deepest anxiety. He openly confessed his terror to God, grounding himself by articulating the fear and recalling the promises he had been given.
This act of sincere prayer was him finding strength in honesty. Naming our fear is powerful because it opens the door for divine reassurance. When we say, “I am afraid,” we create the space to hear the timeless response: “Fear not. I am with you. I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Jacob’s prayer moves him from raw fear to a reminder of faith.
“Please deliver me from the hand of my brother. From the hand of Esau for, I fear him that he may come and attack me, the mothers with the children. But you said, I will surely do you good and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude” (Genesis 32:9-12).
