Today, I’m talking about something that might seem “old school” but is still as fresh as ever: obedience. I know, it’s not exactly a popular topic these days, but hang in there with me. It’s going to be worth it. Our journey begins with the incredible story from Exodus. Imagine a time when the glory of the Lord visibly guided the Israelites daily. A cloud by day, and fire by night. Can you picture that? God’s presence was as real and tangible as the air they breathed.
The Israellites followed God’s commands to the letter, building the tabernacle to His exact specifications. This obedience brought them blessings. Imagine working on something meticulously, and then having your hard work pay off. The Israelites experienced just that. Their completion of the tabernacle was met with Moses’ blessing. They followed directions faithfully, and in return, they received divine favor.
Now, let’s talk about why this matters for you and me. Whether we’re talking about the big things, like following a life path, or simply making daily choices, obedience aligns us with God’s plans. When we listen and follow through, we’re not just doing tasks; we’re engaging in a divine partnership. There’s this connection to something greater, and that brings peace and joy.
Remember that story of King Saul in 1 Samuel. God asked him to annihilate the Amalekites completely, and he didn’t fully adhere to those instructions. He kept some animals, thinking sacrifices would be a better idea. But as the Prophet Samuel pointed out, God values obedience over sacrifices. Aligning our actions with His words is essential because, through obedience, we express our love and trust in Him.
It’s not always easy, though. Obedience requires respect for the small things God gives us to do in our daily lives. But here’s the miracle of obedience, that faithfulness yields the richest blessings. Think of it like a seed planted that grows into something vibrant and fruitful over time.
At times, you’ll feel God’s presence more than at others. It happens. Even when you don’t see the “cloud by day” or “fire by night,” God’s guiding you. It’s our familiarity with His presence which can sometimes lead us to take it for granted. We need to cherish every moment, every whisper of His spirit.
So, here’s my prayer and hope for all of us: that we continually strive to listen and follow God’s guidance. May we be filled with the kind of obedience that brings deeper understanding and closer connection to His intentions for our lives.
