I’m happy you’re joining me today. If you’re someone who loves diving into the richness of God’s word or you’re curious about studying the Torah for the first time, you’re in the right place. Let’s share this journey together, connecting with God and exploring how the time-tested wisdom of the Bible can illuminate and enrich our family relationships.
Blessings of Family
Imagine joining me on this journey through the Torah. Today, we’re focusing on the portion known as Yitro, Jethro in English, delving into the complexities and blessings of family relationships. This section speaks deeply to anyone who’s ever experienced the intricacies of family relationships including The Ten Commandments from the book of Exodus Chapter 20.
My Spiritual Journey
Years ago, while I was in divinity school in Rochester, New York, I found myself searching for a spiritual home and wound up in a Jewish synagogue. It was there that I started studying Torah. Surrounded by a welcoming community founded on God’s Word, I enjoyed a blessed path that brought me closer to God and eventually led to this very podcast.
Looking back, who would have thought those sessions would lead to me hosting this Perfect Body Podcast? I’m here not just to learn, but to share that learning with you, and explore how the Torah can guide us through challenging family dynamics.
Listening to Wisdom
One key story from this portion involves Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro. Moses had left his family with Jethro when he went back to Egypt on God’s mission to free the Israelites from Egypt. Upon his return, Jethro offers Moses some sound advice about delegating his duties rather than trying to do everything himself.
We often find ourselves trying to do it all alone, don’t we? But Jethro teaches us a valuable lesson that seeking help and sharing burdens is not a weakness, but a strength. Sometimes, taking a step back and listening to family members can provide the perspective and support we truly need.
Learning from the Ten Commandments
As we move through this portion, we encounter the Ten Commandments. They form the foundation of not just religious, but relational wisdom. From honoring your father and mother to not bearing false witness against your neighbor, these guidelines instruct us to give respect, integrity, and love within our families.
Even when your relationship is not so good, honoring your parents will lead to promise and fulfillment. Look, this isn’t about what they’ve done or haven’t done, but it’s about respecting the role they’ve played in bringing you to this earth.
Embrace Humility
Much like Moses, we all have the capacity to learn and grow. If there are areas in your family dynamics with tension, perhaps involving a mother-in-law or father-in-law, consider embracing humility and a willingness to listen. These shifts can transform not just your relationships, but your entire outlook on life.
Seeking Peaceful Family Relations
I pray that you find resonance with these timeless principles and apply them in your life. Whether dealing with family challenges or seeking peace and understanding, the wisdom of the Torah is a guiding light pointing us to grace and humility.
Move forward with love in your heart, honoring God and your parents. If you need help with your family relationships, I’m here to help.
Join me next week as we continue exploring new Torah portions. Remember, love God, love you, and love people.
God bless, Shirah Chante, Relationship Artist
