Kingdom of God: Divorce and Adultery — This Is What Jesus Said

Now today’s topic is divorce and adultery. The Pharisees came to Jesus and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?” They were tempting Him. And Jesus answered them by going back to the beginning. He said Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of your hearts. But from the beginning, God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder.

Then Jesus said, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” That is different from what we are used to hearing. Even if you divorce first and then marry someone else, Jesus still calls it adultery.

And I believe this is especially when you already had your eye on someone. Maybe nothing physical happened. Maybe you weren’t sleeping together. But they were already in your heart. Already in your sight. You were thinking, “It’s not going well over here, but this one over there looks better.” Jesus says that is adultery.

That is the Kingdom standard. Not the land’s standard. God’s standard.

If you have done that, you need to repent. Not divorce again. Not undo everything. But repent. Ask God to forgive you. Because we all must repent of our sins.
