In Exodus 25, the Lord says, “Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them… exactly as I show you concerning the pattern of the tabernacle.” Exactly as I show you. That’s what I want to talk about — patterns and plans. The Lord will show you the pattern of your life. He will show you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Sometimes it feels mysterious, but if you step out in faith, the instructions will come. The help will come. The people will come.
When I was in divinity school in Rochester, New York, the Lord called me to sing for Him. That was a pattern for my life. I had been writing songs since I was nine years old, but I never thought of it as my life’s calling. Then God spoke. So I had to prepare. I practiced guitar — which I learned as a child — I developed my songwriting, my singing. I even studied with Al Kasha, a two-time Oscar-winning songwriter. God develops you just like He showed Moses the pattern on the mountain.
Moses was in the wilderness for 30 years before God called him to deliver Israel. He had the anointing earlier — you see it when he killed the Egyptian — but that wasn’t the plan. The desire was there, but the method was wrong. Sometimes there’s a long preparation. It can feel like everyone else is moving ahead of you. But look at Moses. He waited 30 years — and we’re still reading about him today.
So don’t be discouraged in your waiting season. God has a specific pattern and plan for your life. The time you spend with Him — in prayer, in the Word — that’s your mountaintop. That’s where He shows you what to build. And when He shows you, build it exactly as He said.
