I’m happy you’re taking the time to join me for the Love Again Lesson of the Week. Today, I want to talk to you about something close to my heart, honoring your parents. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my relationship with my parents. I realized that I wasn’t giving them the attention and love I wanted to give them. I knew I needed to step up and truly honor them. This journey of rediscovery led me to think about a simple yet profound commandment: “Honor your mother and your father so your days may be long upon the earth.” These words from Exodus 20:12 have been echoing in my heart, urging me to share this message with you.
You might be wondering, what does honoring your parents look like? It’s not about how perfect they were or the mistakes they made. We know parents aren’t flawless; they stumble, they falter. But honoring them means recognizing the role they played in bringing you into this world. It’s about showing unconditional love and respect beyond their performance as parents.
It can be tough, especially if you’ve faced hurt or neglect. I know some of you might have stories of pain, where your parents didn’t meet your expectations. But even then, the call remains: honor them anyway. It’s not an easy path, but it’s the path to unlocking a fuller, more joyous life.
Finding Forgiveness and Love
Forgiving your parents can be a powerful step toward healing. Maybe they weren’t there for you, or they didn’t live up to the ideal. Let go of that anger and release the resentments. In loving them despite their flaws, you open a door to love and respect for yourself. If your parent relationships are already blooming, cherish and nurture that blessing.
So, how about you take a moment to ask for strength? Lord, I pray for a soft heart while seeking forgiveness for my parents where it’s needed. I am ready to transform my relationship with my parents. I pray for strong, healthy connections. Show me where I need to forgive my father and my mother, and help me to forgive and love them in Jesus name. Amen.
Trust that this obedient act of honor will lengthen your life and bring you prosperity. Whether your parents are close, far, or have passed on, let this opportunity to honor them lift your life and help you move forward.
