I Gave Up Singing, Then God Gave Me This Song

The chorus of my song, People in the Street is: “There’s people in the street, people in the street, people in the street. A big lion has taken over me.

I received this song in my spirit one morning early when I was praying in the early hours of the morning. I had given up on being a singer, singing for the Lord, which He called me to do when I was 25 years old. At this time, it was about 15 years later, and nothing had really transpired that I felt was the singing career that the Lord told me I was going to have for Him. Some things happened in my life. I had my son, I was a single mom, and I started working as a teacher full-time. I just thought, well, maybe this is just my life.

But God gave me this song, and it woke up inside of me my calling to sing for the Lord that He called me to do back in the year 2000 when I was standing in the middle of my living room at my on-campus apartment while attending Divinity School in Rochester, New York, at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. I immediately was inspired to sing and write again. The next day, I drove to the Guitar Center and bought a brand new guitar, which I still have and play my songs on today. It’s not too late for you to reach your dreams. Allow the Lord to wake up inside you what He placed inside of you to do those many years ago.

Perhaps you gave up like I did. Perhaps you had a kid and thought, well, I’ll just be a mom, which is wonderful. I love being a mom. But I also like singing, writing songs, and playing my guitar for Jesus Christ my Savior. What else is it that you like to do? I hope these words help you get back to what it is you should be doing for the Lord like He did for me, too.
