Jesus meets a woman at the well in John chapter four, and He starts talking to her about living water—water that will cause her to never thirst again. And then He tells her, “Go call your husband.”
She says, “I have no husband.”
And Jesus says, “You’ve said well. You’ve had five husbands, and the one you’re with now is not your husband.”
Jesus gets in her business. He gets in her bedroom. Jesus will come into the places that hurt.
If you’ve had five husbands, you’ve had a lot of heartbreak. Maybe you haven’t had five husbands, but you’ve had broken relationships. I can totally relate to that.
And the thing that stands out to me is that Jesus knew everything about her—and He still talked to her. He wasn’t there to judge her. He didn’t look down on her. He just said, “I know what you’ve been through, and I’m here for you.”
She could sense something was different. She said, “I know Messiah is coming.” And Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
She went and told others, “Come see a man who told me all I ever did.” And because of her testimony, many believed.
